Provides a wonderful overview of the changes that take place throughout pregnancy and excellent information about ways to stay healthy and to prepare for labor and childbirth.  Includes stretching exercises, massage techniques and coping techniques to use during labor.  Very comprehensive.

The Birth Partner: a complete guide to childbirth for dads, doulas and all other labor companions   by Penny Simkin

A fantastic guide for all birth partners that will be supporting the mother throughout labor and delivery.  Provides clear information on what will be happening and what the mother may be experiencing at different stages of labor, and how the birth partner can work to support her.  Also includes extensive information on interventions that may be offered within a hospital setting.

Birthing From Within  by Pam England and Rob Horowitz

This book focuses on birthing from a very internal perspective, using visualization and art to help the mother and her partner prepare for the birth experience.  Birthing From Within classes are also offered around town.

Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth  by Ina May Gaskin

Ina May, like many of the books listed above, focuses on the incredible connection between the mind and the body that guides a woman through labor and delivery.  She includes information on relaxation and body movement to work with the natural processes of labor.  This book also includes an excellent chapter on vaginal births after cesarean (VBAC’s).

In this comprehensive prenatal guide, midwife and MD, Aviva Jill Romm, focuses on holistic approaches to pregnancy and birth.  There are herbal and nutritional suggestions for many common pregnancy complaints including guidelines on buying and preparing herbs.


Bestfeeding: How to breast feed your baby by Mary Renfrew, Chloe Fisher and Suzanne Arms

An easy to read and comprehensive look at breastfeeding including positioning, challenges and remedies, and general information/logistics associated with breastfeeding.


Naturally Healthy Babies and Children by Aviva Jill Romm, MD.
This is a great book for anyone interested in natural remedies for their children.  The book gives provides basic information on herbal medicine, when they are appropriate to use, and when it is best to seek medical guidance.  The book has herbal remedies along with recipes to make them for everything from the common cold to allergies to earaches and sore throats.
